The Work You Love

Just a quick post to share what I found to be life-changing in Dan Miller’s book 48 Days to the Work You Love.

First, I love the concept. It’s about time we get serious about finding that unique niche where we love what we do and someone has to tell us to turn out the lights and quit working. I’m sure that, like me, you want work that doesn’t feel like work. That only happens when there is an almost perfect match between what you are doing and who you are.No book can give you specifics but Dan’s book makes significant contributions to how we can grapple with this issue and make progress.

What was most powerful? To me, it was the way in which Dan distinguishes between calling, career and job. For example, I know my calling is teaching. But teaching can be expressed in many different venues. Right now, I’m expressing my calling through the career of higher education. Within that venue, my job is as a professor and department chairperson. However, I’m not restricted to that job. I could move to other positions within the career of higher education or formal education. But wait, as they say on late night TV, I could also change careers and still use my gift of teaching.

Powerful stuff. Good job, Dan. Thanks for a great book to help us all pencil in more parts of our plan for progress.
